Resume Opinions: Work history chronological?

ZapBrannigan

If it ain’t a Boeing, I’m not going. No choice.
Since there have been a lot of furloughs over the last decade or so it is not unusual for a pilot to have a regional airline job at a later date than a major airline job, or a non-flying job after a major airline job.

In your opinion, is it ok on a resume (work history) to have jobs out of chronological order so that, for example, the major job is near the top of the work-history section and other jobs near the bottom ... even if that is not chronologically correct?

Thanks

My simple ND education says chronological. I think most people going over resumes can tell what jobs are the "big" ones and which ones are the "filler".

Slight highjack:

Smack Julie for me and ask her about a certain incident with flour, a shower, 6 sorority girls and yours truly...

ummm... pretty sure I could get fired for asking a question like that. lol

On topic: Problem is that my "major airline" experience has fallen off of my "ten year history". I think it's valuable to have it on a resume... but it was a long time ago and I am separated from it by 2 regionals and a corporate flight department now. :(

Well, remember 10 years is the min needed, nothing says you can't include more than 10 years of employment history, especially when it is valid.

To keep the resume to one page the "lesser" gigs can have smaller bodies of information while the mor important ones can have the more detailed information or something along those lines.

You won't get fired, she will just blush, laugh hysterically and say "Oh yeah, took 6 of us but we got that mother...."

I go with a few things for Resume and CV:

Resume:
  • Education
  • If for flight - times
  • Current Experience
  • Related Experience
  • Other Experience
  • Skills and / or References
This makes the dividing of Experience able to go varying through time. I don't think your resume should have everything you've ever done. Show them how you are able to apply yourself, and in ways that you would think would help them. No need to include your 10 year, and you can omit jobs that you think don't help your cause. I still think a Resume should be 1 page, but many disagree.

CV:
  • Education
  • Flight Times
  • Certificates
  • Experience, in chronological order
    • At least 3 bullets for each job, or a paragraph describing your work
  • Skills / developed hobbies related to work (carpenter, welder, rc, radio, etc)
  • References
Also, the design reflects on you. I always encourage a font that isn't times new roman, and change the font size or bold for headers. We all know HR folks that toss out resumes because they are hard to read. A little flare to catch the eye is good, writing in comic sans will get you blacklisted. We can always look it over if you want an opinion.
Good Luck.

Yep. Still one page after all these years and jobs. Now, you need an electron microscope to read the font... But that's another story..
