Lorain County Regonial Airport slated to close

Lorain County Regional Airport is slated to be closed by the end of the year. They want to transfer the funds from the airport to the Lorain County Transit system which is bankrupt. They are expected a legal battle with the FAA since the FAA just gave the airport 480,000 over summer for new taxi ways.

Not good at all.... I hope it stays open. What happened to the "every county in Ohio has an airport" deal?

Were those taxiways built or is that 480,000 the reason they want to close the airport? So they can grab it for the transit system? Heh

Read this a little while back, this is a dilemna that many airports are facing these days. Recently KHZY was slated to close, turns out that it is very difficult to close an airport! Hopefully they will figure out a way (as we did) to keep it open. PM for more info.

they are probably trying to close it for the money to use in the transit system. That project was in the paper every day for like two years and its a very corrupt several county area on the southern side of lake erie

The taxi ways were already built last summer. So part of the problem they will run into if they try to shut it down is that part of the deal to get the money for the taxi ways is that the airport would be open for 10 years after they get the money. Its really a shady deal going on. The airport is running just fine right now but the transit system has been bankrupt for a while. The politicans want you to think by closing the airport and using the funding for the transit system it will do more people good. The fact is that the transit system is so messed up if will just burn through that money too and still be bankrupt. Now to mention how much closing the airport will hurt local busniess. They have a decent amount of corporate jet traffic in and out everyday. Theres not another airport close that can handle those jets. They would be forced to go to cleveland or sandusky. So the county is going to loose out. They also have some small cargo ops that come and go from there. Hopefully the FAA will stick it to them and force them to keep it open. Plus there is something like 200 airplane that are hangared there. I dont know where they will all go if it closes. Elyria city airport cant handle all those and wakeman runways is a joke.

Interesting note. A study done by the ohio department of aviation noted that lorain county regonial airport has a 37 million dollars impact on the community. I cant see how losing that would benefire anyone.

Hi Guys,

Generally, if they take and spend ONE DIME of FAA money, they're on the hook for 20 years.

The FAA has been very agressive about this and they always win in court. There have been some VERY high profile cases with BIG money leveraged on the "close airport" side, and the FAA always prevails. I'm sure AOPA will be chiming in as well.

been there several times, nice airport. would be a shame to see it go. but i doubt it actually happens.

That works well until someone shows up in the middle of the night and bulldozes the runways with no consequences. The precedent has been set.

...and why do I always think there's an "s" in precedent?

He should have been thrown in jail for that little stunt... and forced to pay for the repairs. It really irks me that what was once a cool downtown airport is no longer because the schoolyard bully had to play with his tonka trucks AND GOT AWAY WITH IT.

Thankfully, BKL hasn't been destroyed yet!

This makes me sick! I grew up in the area, and our family business as well as many in the area has benefited from LPR.
They used to have the best vintage airshows. I met Robert Morgan the capt of the Memphis Belle there, and was even in a newspaper article with him.

If anyone knows what can be done to help keep it open, please let me know!

Actually, I think Trivisonno has gotten through to me. That lakefront property is incredibly valuable. Why is it being wasted on an airport when CLE, LNN and CGF are a short drive away?

Plus, if the winds are out of the northeast and the weather is down, it's pretty much useless. You can't circle in 300-3/4. I'd rather see them develop the land into a casino, convention center, or something that could generate more tax revenue than they get from the airport. There's plenty of other airports close by to fill the need.

That may be, but you have to admit that BKL has historic value and charm that the others don't. Besides, I'm convinced that the last thing Cleveland needs is a casino. I haven't been up there in awhile but I usually agree with Trivisonno.... not so much on this. :dunno:

Historic value? For.................?

Well, I think the casino ship may have sailed but they could put a convention center down there or really almost anything to generate more revenue than a GA/reliever airport.

How many operations does it take to pay for the guards to sit at the desk at the bottom of the tower every day?

It was the site for the Cleveland National Air Races as well as the Cleveland Grand Prix. Don't get me wrong, I know what you mean and I agree that more money could be made with something else in its place. However, it's a neat little airport without many other like it. I'd much rather see them try to revitalize it a bit and attract more operations just to keep it alive.

Sometimes I say screw the monetary value... it just needs to be done for the kicks!

Can't disagree with that. But when this area is being taxed to hell and back, running business out of the area and consequently running jobs and people out of the area.................you gotta do something.

Yeah, that's very true. That's pretty much where my entire extended family lives and grew up. Things in that city aren't quite what they were...
