Getting comfortable

How long does it usually take for a student to get comfortable in a helicopter? I had a demo flight in a R-22 yesterday and, although I was able to fly without much trouble, I was nowhere near as comfortable as I feel in a fixed-wing aircraft. It's almost like you're fighting with the helicopter to make it fly.

It took me a little bit, but everyone will be different. I didn't really start feeling comfortable until I was able to get through a series of autorotations without any instructor input. Machines like the R-22 are going to feel like they're fighting you no matter what you do. You just get used to it and learn its rhythm. After a little while you don't even think about it anymore.
